Jan Shaw Therapeutic Youth Home for Girls

 

 

The Jan Shaw Therapeutic Youth Home for Girls is part of Rocky Mountain Youth Resources, a program that has been supporting and sheltering Montana youth since 1975. The Jan Shaw, a 6-bed facility, serves girls ages 12-17. 

Rocky Mountain Youth Resources believes that all youth need the skills to experience and form healthy relationships and the skills to live independently. Therefore RMYR’s core curriculum at Jan is tailed around the following five goals:

  1. Youth will work toward developing the respect that leads to keeping self, others, and property safe.
  2. Youth will increase understanding of the characteristics of and begin to enter into healthy relationships.
  3. Youth will develop independent living skills.
  4. Youth will gain awareness of self and community. 
  5. Youth will receive therapy throughout their stay and will learn new skills needed to succeed with a mental illness.

 

The ideal candidate has the following characteristics:

 

  1. Age 12-17 years
  2. Prosocial – ability to follow basic rules and develop effective relationships with staff
  3. History of negative behaviors that do not include an extensive history or current threat of assault or self-injury
  4. Difficulty in school
  5. Lack of boundaries OR truancy/runaway
  6. Functional IQ between 85 (lower bound) and 135 (upper bound)
  7. Single or co-occurring diagnoses
  8. History of delinquent or maladaptive behavior paired with motivation to succeed
  9. Reactive Attachment Disorder
  10. Cluster A/B personality characteristics or Bonderline Personality Disorder
  11. Sexually Reactive

 

The following youth are generally not appropriate for placement in our facility:

 

  • History of arson
  • Conduct Disorder
  • Antisocial Personality Disorder
  • Functioning IQ less than 85
  • Sex Offenders
  • Pregnant/parenting teens – can accept pregnant females through 1st trimester

 

All Rocky Mountain Youth Resources take part in the 12-week Youth on Track to Adulthood (YOTA) program.
